Happy Labor Day from The Hostess City Saint

Thanks to late 19th century workers, advocates, and organizers, we have a holiday today.

Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer and celebrates the rights of workers in America. The tradition began 142 years ago when, in the decades following the Civil War, industrial conditions were increasingly exploitative. Child labor, brutally long work days, and dangerous working environments were what many endured daily.

This culminated in 1882 when 10,000 workers and union organizers took to the streets of New York City for an entire day to show the solidarity—and power—of labor. They celebrated with a parade, speeches, food, entertainment, and fireworks.

Today, we can thank these brave folks for planting the seeds of a 40-hour work week and concept of the weekend. And so much more for workers’ rights.

Sandfly BBQ may be closed on Labor Day, but when they re-open tomorrow, you can pop in, get some of that delicious, low-and-slow cooked signature brisket, and share it with friends.

Thanks to all our new supporters at the Hostess City Saint—YOU are helping us launch this close-to-the-heart labor of love.

Sincerely,

Josephine & Rob
